Does a Beginner Golfer Need a Handicap?
If you are a beginner golfer and looking for some beginner golf tips, I’ve got some for you.. (That was a joke ). As a beginner golfer, you already have more advice than you want. I am sure of that. I hate it when people I don’t know are always advising me on the golf course. I don’t know why it bugs me so much, but it does.
Nevertheless, you do need information if you hope to ever enjoy the game. One question that always plagued me was this whole “handicap” business. When people would ask me my handicap, I would always just shrug and say I don’t know. It was the truth.
Soon after hitting the links a few times, I joined some friends in a Scramble Tournament and they wanted to know my handicap. This time I had to put something down , so I just put 30+. The truth is I am over 30+ but I knew they couldn’t handle the truth. Anyway, the answer to the question for a beginner golfer is “yes” and “no”.
Sometimes you will need to have a number in mind that could be close to your handicap and usually you can just throw that out. A real live handicap is much more complicated and requires that you register somewhere and record each of your scores for maybe 5-10 times. After that, you can have an official handicap.
In my opinion, a great beginner golf tip is to not worry about it. I think learning golf is hard enough without the pressure of having to know all these things when you are new. I still don’t have an official handicap. I have learned quite a bit though. One thing I learned was that you just have to have fun with golf, and don’t let the golf snobs ruin it for you. Buy some cheap discount golf balls from Ebay and have fun loosing them.
